Hoping to start a new life…
… after discovering she was HIV+,Lisa and her daughter moved to Rochester from New York City, with few belongings, little money and a plan in place to stay with a cousin.
Upon their arrival, she learned plans had changed, leaving Lisa confused and without support. A local homeless shelter for women and children referred her to AIDS Rochester for HIV counseling and case management. Six months later, through the guidance of her case manager, Lisa and had obtained medical care, an apartment, regularly volunteers at ARI, and her health is stable.
Lisa is very grateful to AIDS Rochester for welcoming her, for caring about her and her daughter’s well being, and for supporting her goal of self-sufficiency.
Although Lisa misses her family in New York City, she says that the resources she needs to live a fulfilling life, and the slower pace in Rochester, is “all she hoped it would be”.
